What is a Strong Password?

In 2025, 94% of passwords in leaked datasets are reused or weak, and an eight-character numeric password can be cracked instantly by hackers.

When creating a password, people often choose something memorable, like personal words or numbers. These are considered weak passwords because they’re easy to guess.

A strong password is hard to predict, at least six characters long, mixes upper and lower case letters and numbers, and avoids dictionary words or anything linked to your personal details.

A brute force attack is when hackers repeatedly guess passwords until they find the right one and gain access.

Why are Passwords Important?

Passwords protect your private information and accounts-like email, banking, and business logins-from unauthorized access. Weak passwords make it easy for someone to break in, leading to anything from minor inconvenience to major financial loss or business data breaches.

Though creating strong passwords takes effort, it’s far less trouble than dealing with a security breach or stolen funds. It’s essential to use strong, unique passwords and know the basics of good password practices.

Surprisingly, many people still use very weak passwords. The top five are:

  1. 123456

  2. 123456789

  3. qwerty

  4. password

  5. 11111

Examples of Weak Passwords

Not using 123456 as your work email's password? Great. But even then there is a good chance your passwords are not secure.

Examples of weak passwords include:

  • Simple patterns (123456, qwerty)

  • Common words (password, letmein)

  • Names or birthdays

  • Passwords reused across multiple sites

  • Shared passwords among colleagues

  • Passwords that are never updated or changed

How to Come Up with Strong Password Ideas

To come up with strong password ideas, try combining unrelated words, numbers, and symbols into a long phrase that’s easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess.

Avoid using personal details or common patterns. You can also think of a favorite quote or song lyric and modify it with numbers and special characters.

If you want extra security and convenience, use a password manager to generate and store complex, unique passwords for each account. Regularly updating your passwords and never reusing them across sites will also help keep your accounts safe.

The Importance of Strong Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication

To further enhance security, multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of protection. MFA requires you to verify your identity in two or more ways-such as entering a password and confirming a code sent to your phone, or using your fingerprint. Even if someone manages to get your password, MFA makes it much harder for them to access your account. Using both strong passwords and MFA together is one of the most effective ways to safeguard your information online.
